You Have A Brand. Do You Know What It Is?
What People Think About Your Brand
I found a fun site called Brand Tags. It shows a well-known logo and asks “What is the first thing that pops into your head?” You type in your one-word thought…then you can see what other people think about that brand.
Example…the Medieval Times logo popped up. I typed in “cartoonish”. The biggest response to the logo was “Cheesy”. Well, I don’t think it was just the logo people were responding to. I think it was the concept of the restaurant.
Most churches don’t think about their brand. I believe all churches have a brand, whether they know it or not. Some churches have an intentional brand, while others have a brand that is simply based on the unintended perception about the church.
Perception about our churches is a big deal. It’s not just about logos. It’s about word of mouth, public relations, community impact, and tons of other factors.
Recently read about 2 churches that are making news across the US. However, the news is very negative. One of the churches has put a restraining order on a man who is autistic. The other church has created a ruckus about a famous bar known for its provocative women.
Pop Quiz: What is the perception of those churches?
a) Embracing, warm and accepting
b) Culturally relevant
c) Legalistic and un-loving
d) Other
Who we are and how we act communicates more clearly than any extravagant, well planned strategy. It’s not about who your church says they are…it’s about who your church is.
