Adding more hands to the creative process (part 2)
Earlier I wrote about this subject Here and recently I have come to recognize the complexity of such a task. About a month ago our creative department did a heavy push in our church to attract volunteers to join our team in the areas of web, video, tech and design. During the push we created some videos that played on Sunday mornings in our services and one Sunday we even held a ministry fair in which we setup computers and displays of various work that we have done. From there we attracted people to the fair and got a percentage of them to attend an initial interest meeting. At the interest meeting we had several of our team members speak about their departments and opportunities available. There was something about that meeting and the idea of getting other people involved in what we are doing that is exciting to me and feels right.
Since this interest meeting I have formed two groups in the area of video production, one being a screenwriters group and one being a media team. The first time I tried this I made one group to accomplish both tasks and that group failed, hence the meaning for creating two groups. Both groups will meet every other week for an hour and a half on certain nights during the week. I decided to put these groups at opposite weeks for my sanity’s sake. The screenwriters group will work on scripts such as short films that will then be handed over to the media team to produce. Right now we are currently working on shooting a short film in a couple of weeks in order to get everyone’s feet wet and build the team. In February we are planning to enter the 168 hour film race. For this race they give you a verse and then give you about a week to write and a week to produce a 11 minute film. I am hoping that this race will be a project that will really build and develop these two teams as we are forced to work under the gun and have a deadline in front of us.
I am not claiming to have figured out this whole volunteer piece, however I do believe that the first couple of times I failed at doing this were key to helping this round of things be more successful. Overall I am excited to be working with more people and participating in community with fellow artists.
