Creating videos in multiple languages
I can remember taking Spanish courses in high school and college and thinking to myself….when am I ever going to need to know Spanish or better yet how can this possibly help me in my film-making career later in life. It’s funny because today I find myself working in church near Houston, which is one of the most multi-cultural cities in the United States. Our church has a growing Spanish ministry that has been very successful these past few years and has recently had to move facilities because of their growing attendance.
I haven’t been able to focus on this ministry because of my language barrier, however recently I was able to re-connect with a volunteer that speaks great Spanish and has a passion to create videos. I ended up shooting one video in English about the Spanish ministry and then I had this volunteer help me shoot a similar video in Spanish. He then took the video I did in English with the same b-roll and cut a story to fit with the Spanish interview.
I think the success for this project was finding a volunteer that understood the basics of editing and was bi-lingual. This is exciting because hopefully this project will be the first of many videos in Spanish produced entirely by Spanish speaking volunteers.
