Why systems help creatives
Lets face it “creatives” are known for getting the bad rap of being disorganized. We thrive in chaos and and prefer to be organized in our mind without letting that organization leak out into our work enviornment. One of things that really resonated with me about Scott Belsky’s book Making Ideas Happen, is that Scott stresses the idea that organization is one of the keys to productivity.
I consider myself to be fairly organized but there are still areas in my life that are disorganized and end up frustrating me because I am less productive in those areas.
One of the solutions I have found to creating organization is creating systems that work and systems I will actually use.
A personal example of this is my resistance to using filing cabinets. For me filing cabinets are too time consuming to use and I hate the idea of labeling files. One system I created in place of a filing system was using a mail-like holding structure (name?). For each project I have I put it in a folder and then I have three compartments for each part of the process. The folder moves as the project moves.
Pre-Production >> Production >> Post-Produciton
Having a system like this helps me to quickly and easily grab the project I need when I go to a meeting or am curious what I have on the back-burner.
What systems are you creating in your workplace that will ultimately help you to be more productive?
